FUNCTIONS BIOSPHERE RESERVES:
According to the guidelines of the Conference of Seville (1995), adopted by Resolution 28C/2.4 General Conference of UNESCO and Article 3 of the Statutory Framework, these reserves contribute to the achievement of three objectives:
The conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic diversity.
The economic and human development which is socio-culturally and ecologically.
Scientific knowledge and logistical support, to support demonstration projects, education and environmental training and research and monitoring related to local, regional, national and global conservation and sustainable development.
As the Sierras Galaico-Miñotas and valleys associated biogeographical unit, the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Xurés Gerês focuses on cooperation and sustainable use through joint management of a shared ecosystem.
